of the Seven Seas) Haul Away, Joe! is a tack and sheet shanty, although it<br>
may<br>
have been used as a halyard song. According to T.E. Elwell, 'pull' or 'haul'<br>
was often sung instead of 'Joe' at the end of the refrain, to correspond<br>
with the action.<br>
This shanty was usually sung with an Irish accent. Verses 6 and 7<br>
are probably from the shore-song Aunt Jemima's Plaster. On account of many<br>
versions of Haul Away, Joe starting with a verse 'Haul away my Rosy', this<br>
sheet<br>
shanty is given this title by some writers.<br>
