Notes: (taken from Shanties
of the Seven Seas) Haul Away, Joe! is a tack and sheet shanty, although it
may
have been used as a halyard song. According to T.E. Elwell, 'pull' or 'haul'
was often sung instead of 'Joe' at the end of the refrain, to correspond
with the action.
This shanty was usually sung with an Irish accent. Verses 6 and 7
are probably from the shore-song Aunt Jemima's Plaster. On account of many
versions of Haul Away, Joe starting with a verse 'Haul away my Rosy', this
sheet
shanty is given this title by some writers.
When I was a little lad and so me mother told me,
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe.
That if I did not kiss the girls me lips would grow all moldy.
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe.
Way haul away, we'll haul for better weather.
Away haul away, we'll haul away Joe.
Way haul away, we'll haul away together.
Away haul away, we'll haul away Joe.

Saint Patrick was a gentleman. He came from decent people.
