The music in this film is its breath. It never stops and it keeps the film alive. Richard Dworsky and THE GUYS were superb to work with: great musicians with an astonishing repertoire {most of which they write themselves) - and it all just sings. Working with them was one of my keenest pleasures on the picture, matched only by getting to know some of Garrison's other top-flight regulars and witnessing what some of my terrific cast — Meryl Streep, Lily Tonilin, John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson, L.Q. Jones and Lindsay Lohan — can do on a stage with a song. It inspired me while we were shooting and it inspires me still.

-Robert Altman

Bob Altman is a man who treats musicians and actors with affection and deference. 'That's good,' he'll say after a take, 'let's do it again.' And so shooting the movie was more fun than it had any right to be. Everyone who made this movie was there because they wanted to work with Bob — Meryl bounced up from knee surgery and John came directly from 'Streetcar' on Broadway and Lindsay and Lily postponed other things and L.Q. came Flying in from Europe and it was a lovely five weeks. John and Woody played guitars on the set and practiced rope tricks, and Kevin stayed in Guv Noir character, and Lily laughed her great laugh, and Lindsay bonded with Meryl, and L.Q. told Sam Peckinpah stories, and when Meryl did her last shot and was officially released — at 4 a.m., standing in the intersection of 7th and St. Peter in downtown St. Paul— she hugged everybody and grinned and said, "I don't want you to have any more fun without me." A true benediction. This album is the result of Bob's generous encouragement and love of music. He loved having that Shoe Band onstage during his shoot and listened to them messing around while the crew moved lights and reset the cameras and so the movie soundtrack is all live recording, no studio stuff. If ever musicians had a friend, they found that friend in Bob.
