The Society of Old Bold Aviators (SOBA) is a non-profit group dedicated to the accumulation, preservation and performance of the unique brand of songs that have been created, adapted, sung and handed down by military pilots and other airmen since they first launched their machines into battle. These songs are less a history of military flight than a combination of themes, ballads and remembrances set to music; in today's terms, they are more like "anti-history with an attitude." SOBA's name derives from the old flying dictum that "there are old aviators and there are bold aviators, but there are no old bold aviators." However, the original flyer-performers in the group claim that, despite the experiences of several of them, both in combat and in more routine flight operations, they were still around and bolder than ever; hence their chosen name. The songs on this CD were selected from SOBA's third annual Flyers' Songfest (SOBA-3) which was held on 1 July 2000 at the Ft. Myer Officers' Club in Arlington, Virginia. Some are "traditional," from World Wars I and II, and Korea; others are the performers' own, deriving largely from their own or general flying experiences in the Southeast Asia War. All reflect a broad range of approaches and attitudes to aerial combat and flight operations in general. We hope you enjoy them.
