Short Timing Sailor Boy

I turned eighteen and joined up with the Navy
Well, that feller told me, "Join, and see the world!"
Oh, my hair used to be long and wavy
And I only took orders from my girl

Then my Uncle Sammy poked his finger at me one fine day
He said, "I need you now, my boy, so don't you walk away."
Now I'm shining brass and swabbing decks and counting every hour
Til the day the U S Navy lets me out

I have chopped cotton, slopped hogs, and planted
Black-eyed peas on my daddy's one-horse farm
Now, I'm off to see the world through a porthole
And my first port-of-call's in Vietnam
