Get Out of the Rain
Peter, Wynne, 26 March 1966,#67

One day I stopped by this friend of mine's house,
but that's one day that I will never forget.
Man, you couldn't walk around this man's house without steppin' in a pile of shit.
His windows they were all dirty and most of them were broken out,
and he had little pissy babies and they were running all about.
Snot was dripping from their little nostrils, looked just like the yella from the egg,
shit was oozing out their diapers down their filthy little legs.

Now next to this little youngest one was a little two-year-old,
and they all called him little Buster, damn his little soul.
Little Buster he came up to me and he crawled up on my knee,
gas from little Buster's ass burned blisters upon my thighs,
and the piss from little Buster's diapers drawed water to my eyes.
Now the head of that family, which I am gonna call no name,
but that was little Buster's daddy, and damned if he didn't smell the same.
The mama she was a little different, in her middle-age sag,
she was sportin' a pair of her husband's work shoes
and wearin' a skirt made out a burlap bag.
There were fourteen babies sleepiri in one bed,
they had seven at the foot, and they had seven at the head,
All the rest of 'em slept on a pallet on the floor
with the mama and the daddy and the baby boy called Joe.
Now you know I don't like to talk about people, because it's all in vain,
it's a sad situation and it's too hard to explain.
But I've said it once before and I'll say it once again:
if I ever stop by his house again, it'll be for the
same thing — to get in out of the rain.
