5. IT'S A TRUE SONG (Interview) Alan Lomax: Where is that from, Jeannie? Jeannie Robertson: Well it's an old, old ballad that I used to hear my people singing long, long ago. That's a very old ballad. But that's not all there is, I know that. Alan Lomax: That's not the whole song? Jeannie Robertson: No. Two or three verses [are] missing. Alan Lomax: In the middle of it or at the end? Jeannie Robertson: Well, before you come to the end. Alan Lomax: And is this a true song? Jeannie Robertson: Yes it's a true song. Alan Lomax: And do you know where it happened? Jeannie Robertson: I couldn't tell you where it happened, but it's supposed to be a real true song. Alan Lomax: And is that what the brothers really quarreled over, was it? Jeannie Robertson: Well now you see, as far as I've heard the story, John wanted to be master, but David was the oldest. And he was master, you see. And both of them was a rich man's sons. And of course, John was headstrong and he wanted his way. And David couldn't think of it, you see, so the two of them fought. So David had killed him. |
