One of a series of antique photographs I'm selling that have
been carefully excised from a book I own, "Harvard College
Photographs." This particular book was owned by a student who
graduated in 1866. The photographs were taken by George K. Warren, a
noted Boston photographer. Warren was a pioneer in the field of
school yearbooks, and developed a system whereby a graduating
student would order pertinent photos from his stock, and the order
would be assembled into a book. Each book was unique, and a great
keepsake from days spent at Harvard. Each photo is an original - not
a reproduction - oval albumen print, mounted on a plate that
measures 13" x 10 1/4". Each mount has gold gilt edges. Grading is
based on defects, as each mount has some natural aging around the
edges. This is a portrait of Francis J. Child. Child (1825-1896) was
for 45 years a noted Harvard English professor and philologist,
publishing very important books on Chaucer, and English and Scottish
ballads. Francis Gummere called him "the keenest, soundest, most
loved of American scholars." The photo measures 6" x 4 3/4", and
grades 10 of 10. Very nice. The mount grades 9 of 10, with a few
tiny spots, o/w very nice. Postage will be $3.50, optional insurance
extra. (Thanks for looking, and please take a look at the other old
photos I have up for auction.) LEGALESE: No returns accepted, so
please ask all questions before bidding. Checks okay, but they have
to clear. Payment must be received within 14 days of notification.
