SCOUTING WAYS Hpw <^IRI_ SCOUTING BEGAN IN THE UNITFn fiy^jfrcx Girl Scouting in the United States was started by a very unusual woman named Juliette Gordon Low. Juliette's nickname all her life was "Daisy". She was given this nickname shortly after her birth, when an uncle said, I bet she s going to be a daisyl" Daisy was born in Savannah. Georgia, on October 31,1860. Daisy married William Low in 1886. and went to live with his family in England. On her wedding day, a guest threw soma rice at her for good luck, and some rice went into her ear. When a doctor tried to remove it. Daisy became totally deaf in that ear. Juliette Gordon Low was not one to be stopped by a disability. In May. 1911, Daisy went to a luncheon in England where she met Lord Robert Baden Powell, or "B.P." as he was called. He had started Boy Scouting in 1908, but at a rallv in England two years later, he found that girlsr too. were interested in becoming Scouts He asked his sister Agnes to help him start a Scout organization for girls. When Baden-Powell visited Daisy in Scotland in August, 1911, she heard about the Scouting movement for girls and immediately organized a Scottish Girl Guide troop When Daisy arrived in Savannah, she phoned her cousin, Nina Pape, and said, "Come riaht over! I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world and we're going to start it tonight!" On March 12,1912,18 girls met at Daisy's house to form a Girl Guide troop. 1 Daisy changed the name of the American Girl Guides to Girl Scouts in 1913. For the rest of her life, Daisy traveled and shared her ideas and dreams with millions of girls everywhere Juliette Low died in 1927, but the organization she founded lives and flourishes throughout the free world. - ' - ; SCOUTrNG WAYS rim sroUTS ^ (6 YEARS TO 10 YEARS) ^''SSt^ fingers extended and separated represenfcs the ^ L^rs of the Wolf Cub.
