When she left the village she was shy,

When she came back,
There was a naughty little twinkle in her eye.

Here's to our Alpha Alpha dear,
Strong is our loyalty ever,
We grow more fond of you year by year,
We swear to forget you never,
And when we leave our dear High School
We're bound by ties of friendship,
And our affections ne'er will cool
For Alpha, Chapter Zeta.
II
Years may come and years may go,
But true to the gold and white,
May we keep its honor bright,
And loyalty we'll ne'er outgrow.
And here's to the jolly A. A. 2.,

Tune—"Down the Field"
We cheer for Zeta Chapter of A. A.,
And may she live and prosper,
Forever and a day,
We love and honor our Sorority,
May every girl who wears the pin
Not fail in loyalty.
So let our voices *shout for Alpha Alpha, she must win!
We'll fight with all our might and strength for her;
And never will give in;
We'll give another shout for A. A. 2., who are in the
fray!
And hope that they too, will cheer for A-L-P-H-A!
We're firm in our belief that she is best of all.
Chorus
March, march on, one and all,
Fighting to never fall!
We'll conquer in the fight,
By the sign of the "Gold and White,"
We love New Haven High
And our Alumnae,
Hold together!
Fight forever!
For A. A.
—Delta Chapter, Hartford, Conn.
I
Why do the girls all look so well,
Dressed up in silks and satins so swell?
Ask them and this they will always tell,
We're going to Alpha Alpha.
II
Where are the boys we see at lunch,
Going around in a familiar bunch?
They love phosphates and sodas and lemonades
and punch,
And also Alpha Alpha.
4
Ill
Dances and picnics we have till we choke,
Fathers and mothers we soon have broke,
Sisters and brothers we also soak,
For it's all for Alpha Alpha.
IV
On Mondays at 3 :15 we appear,
Whether it rains or the weather is clear,
For this is the time that we hold very dear,
For we are Alpha Alpha.
V
The flunks we all get we take as a dream,
Teachers may fuss and land on our beans,
But they are the milk, and we're the cream,
For we are Alpha, Alpha.
—Mu Chapter, Washington, D. C.
We recall the day when we were candidates,
We waited with hopes and fears,
For the girls to appear—
Distant to us was A. A.,
But we all had hopes—
To be admitted into dear A. A. at last.
Alpha days, Alpha days,
Live again our active days.
Glee clubs, Frats and Proms at night,
Hazing candidates at night,
Alpha days, Alpha days,
We are proof that societies pay.
All declare no life can compare with our
Alpha days.
(The last part and chorus of Rah, Rah for the college.)
5
Tune— Fair Harvard'
Alpha Alpha, we bring thee allegiance most true,
As we meet in thy honor today.
The best we can give is no more than thy due,
We will love thee and serve thee alway.
Chorus
Then schoolmates join hands and our voices we'll raise
'Til our song reach up to the sky;
Here's love and good-will for our happy school-days
In dear, dear old New Haven High.
Some people look wise and say they are wrong,
And object to our High School S. S.
But we know there's no harm in our dear double A.,
Or her brother, the good A. D. S. (Chorus.)
THE INITIATION
Tune—"Auld Lang Syne"
'Twas on a dark and stormy night
That we were taken in,
And all the "grads" were* there to see
How we were taken in.
Chorus
Now let our praises ring aloud
To honor dear A. A.
We'll always to her faithful be
Forever and for aye.
They dressed us up in awful clothes,
And then they cried, "Oh, say!
Who are those freakish looking things?
They're not members of A. A." (Chorus.)
We kicked around and did some stunts,
But that was not enough.
We then went up and down the "mill,"
And got the real stuff. (Chorus.)
We swallowed fruit, we swallowed egg,
And then we jumped on beans,
But very soon we took the oath
And later hugged our pins. (Chorus.)
—Nellie P. Elliot, 1914.
Tune—"Maryland"
I
I'll sing a song my sisters here
Of Alpha dear, oh, Alpha dear,
All through my active High School days
Alpha, dear, I'll sing thy praise.
Here's to our brothers, A. A. 2.,
To whom allegiance we confess,
For Alpha girls are loyal friends,
Alpha dear, old, Alpha dear.
II
To Zeta Chapter now all hail,
Alpha dear, oh. Alpha dear.
This Alpha sister .will not fail,
Alpha dear, oh, Alpha dear.
In faithfulness and purpose true
My love I now will give to you,
May Alpha's- days be fully blest,
Alpha dear, oh, Alpha dear.
—Florence D. Hoyt, 1915.
Tune—"There's Music in the Air"
I
There's music in the air
When we Alpha girls are near.
We wipe out every care
When that Monday comes so dear.
Then, oh then, at 3 :15,
At the meeting, all are seen;
Woe to those who late appear,
If they love their nickles dear.
II
There's noises in the air
When the president pounds a chair
With her cunning little gavel;
Oh, the poor, poor little chair.
Then, oh, then, the noise must cease
And around must all be peace.
While to business we attend
Our advice we freely lend.
7
Ill
There's laughter in the air
When our init. comes 'round.
All stunts that are most rare,
At our big init. are found.
Then, oh then, the candidate
Thinks she's met with cruel fate,
When she tries to please each one*
'Til her task is finally done.
IV
There's music in the air
When that big init. is o'er
The baby's combed her hair,
Our commands she heeds no more.
When at last the songs she hears,
And our dear old Alpha cheers,
Knows she'll ne'er meet friends so dear,
As she finds in Alpha here.
—Evelyn Ailing, 1915.
Time—"Yankee Doodle"
I
Oh, first we're here, and then we're there,
And always in a hurry;
But no one knows why we are out,
And that's why they don't worry.
Chorus
Here we are at 3:15,
Not a minute later.
Everyone is here on time,
And true to Alpha, Zeta.
II
But if by chance you should be later,
Or couldn't come at all,
Then pay a fine, or meet your fate—
And that I won't recall.
Chorus
So be there at 3 :15,
Not a minute later.
For we must be always true
To Alpha, chapter Zeta.
8
Ill
For Alpha girls are jolly girls,
And always stay together.
But if you don't believe that's true,
Just look in rainy weather.
Chorus
Rain or shine we always meet—
We don't care for weather—
For we are a happy bunch,
When we are all together.
—Bernice Foote, 1916.
Tune—"Watch on the Rhine"
I
Dear short and happy Alpha days
In which we meet thy name to praise,
How quickly are ye passing by!
Oh, why doth times so swiftly fly?
The years they come, the years they go,
They're filled with joys or filled, with woe,
But time, however long, shall never end
Friendships in Alpha formed, which we defend.
II
If we in distant climes should roam,
And be divided from our home,
Dear Alpha still our light would *be,
A star of hope in a northern sea.
As round the oak the creeper twines
The clinging tendrils of its vines,
So will dear Alpha our hearts closely tie,
In bonds of cherished love that ne'er shall die.
—Florence Weiss, 1916.
9
Tune—"Poll y-Wolly-Doodle
I
Oh! there was a lass,
And I'll tell you if you ask—
She was an Alpha candidate,
She cuckooed her name
Till it made her so lame
That she couldn't go upstairs at night.
Chorus
Fare thee well! Fare thee well!
Fare thee well, oh, candidate!
Now, don't you dare to scold,
But do everything you're told,
Or else you must beware your fate!
II
She was very scared,
And so thus she fared,
When the day of her init. come 'round—
She went through the mill,
And her egg did spill,
Which was very bad, she found.
Ill
But then at last,
It all is past,
For now she's a member of A. A.
Her oath is said,
Her candidacy dead,
She now is one of us for aye.
Chorus
Fare thee well! Fare thee well!
Fare the well for something new!
Those days are now no more,
You are Alpha to the core,
And to her you'll be always true.
—Doris Leopold, 1917.
10
Tune—"Amici"
I
Classmates, dear, we're pledged together,
Pledged in words of cheer,
That in fair or cloudy weather,
We'll have naught to fear.
Chorus
Alpha Alpha, true to thee,
Fondly we sing thy praise
While we're onward, upward striving
Through dear High School days.
II
High School days are swiftly fleeting,
Yet the mem'ry stays
Of the work, the sports, the meeting,
Through dear High School days.
Ill
Here's to Alpha down the ages!
Here's to A. D. S.!
Here's to teachers, wise as sages,
In N. H. H. S.
—Dorothy Randle, 1917.
11
Air—Glory, Hallelujah
Here's to Alpha Alpha and to Zeta Chapter dear,
Our hearts will always cling to her when we are far
or near.
Loudly do we sing to her and joyously we cheer:
Hurrah for Alpha dear.
Chorus
Alpha Alpha, flourish ever,
The bond of years forget we never.
Naught our friendship's tie shall sever,
Cheer, Girls, for Alpha, cheer!
But though we love our chapter dear we're honor
students too,
And for the sake of H. H. S. there are many things
we do.
Yet when swiftly pass the days of school and meetings
all too few,
To Alpha we'll be true. (Chorus.)
(Addendum.)
And now we raise our voices high in praise of A. D. S.
For everything they do for us is one great big success.
And that they have no equal in our hearts we must
confess,
As we cheer for A. D. S. (Chorus.)
—Alice B. Hammond.
(Partly adapted from a Bryn Mawr '98 song.)
Tune—"What's the Matter With Father.?"
What's the matter with Alpha?
She's all right;
Give a cheer for Alpha,
With all your might.
She's the one, of whom we're proud
Sing her praises long and loud.
What's the matter with Alpha?
She's ajr right.
—Charlotte Ritter.
Tune—"I Never Knew"
We never knew what girls could do
'Til we had our init.
We never knew what a raw egg was
'Til we proposed that toast,
We never knew, how glad we could be
'Til we received that pin,
We never knew what Alpha was
'Til we were taken in.
We never knew what Alpha meant,
and what it all was like,
We never knew that Alpha girls were
the best that ever came down the pike.
We never knew how good it was to be
one of them,
The best in all N. H. H. S. and faithful
to the end.
We'll ne'er forget our Alpha days,
and all that they stand for.
We'll ne'er forget N. H. H. S. and what
it means to us.
We'll sing our praise of A. D. S. and
always loyal be,
And hope that they to us will
always as loyal be.
—Marjone Hill, 1918.
