ALLEGRO ELITE 4000 SERIES 10" LP's produced by ELI
OBERSTEIN c. 1953-1957
Allegro Elite appears to have made its debut in the holiday season of 1953. By then the Allegro 12-inch series had reached approximately 3124. The 4000 list is incomplete and there is a conspicuous
gap between 4060 and 4101. The Varsity, Royale,
and Concertone labels were produced concurrently with Allegro Elite and
drew from the same material. Any help with any of these labels is welcome.
Allegro was originally started by Paul Puner to bring seldom-recorded works to the then-new LP market. He also licensed material from Oriole in the U. K. and Disco France. When the venture foundered, Eli Oberstein stepped in and merged it with his low-budget operations. The 10" Allegro-Elite catalog consisted of Puner's material, pirated tapes from German radio along with masters from the old Sonora, Majestic and Musicraft labels. All of this material was later sold to Pickwick International and was being reissued by Simitar Entertainment. Updated 10/1/01.
